THE PROCLAMATION AND SENTENCE: “It is hereby ordered by the Mother Superior that you Sister Agnes shall submit yourself to penance for failing to live up to the standard of your status. The demons and evil spirits within you must be driven out through pain and discomfort. Therefore you are to be bound to the tree of repentance. And so bound shall submit to no fewer that 50 lashes upon your posteriors. Upon completion of this prescribed penance if you are still in keeping with evil spirits Brother Philip shall take further measures to rid you of this burden.”
